Nancy Walt leads a team of staff who coordinate:

  • the development of all K-12 provincial curricula
  • classroom assessment support material (e.g., BC Performance Standards)
  • student reporting policies and guidelines
  • the development of the Foundation Skills Assessment at Grades 4 and 7
  • the development of Grade 10, 11 and 12 provincial exams
  • BC’s participation in national and international assessments (PCAP, PIRLS, PISA)

Nancy began with the Ministry of Education in 1987 and has held a number of positions in the areas of classroom assessment and large-scale assessment. The BC Performance Standards development was a key activity led by Nancy. Nancy moved into management in 2004 to lead the Ministry’s Assessment Branch. In 2011, Provincial Curriculum was added to her portfolio. Nancy holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a Master of Arts in educational measurement and evaluation from the University of Victoria.

The BC Ministry of Education and educators across the province are currently focused on transforming curriculum and assessment in support of personalized learning. Current interests in assessment include:

  • developing and implementing modern assessment for learning principles, approaches and supporting resources
  • aligning classroom assessment guidelines with changed emphasis in curriculum
  • staying informed of new metrics, measures and assessment of complex skills and competencies
  • creating a cohesive K-12 assessment framework showing relationships between classroom and large-scale assessment
