Mary is a successful leader of educational reform. She led the development of the New Zealand Curriculum for primary and secondary schools, the design of the New Zealand National Assessment Strategy and the design of National Standards in literacy and numeracy.

Mary has a robust theoretical and practical understanding of public policy frameworks and in depth education knowledge. She has been a successful teacher, school principal and adviser to schools.
In 2012 she became a Member of the New Zealand order of Merit for her services to education.

Mary was the Manager of the Curriculum Group in the Ministry of Education NZ until 2011. Her responsibilities included leadership of the curriculum, assessment, qualifications, professional development, Maori medium, literacy and numeracy and principal leadership teams. Mary is currently an education consultant. She is working with ministries of education and other organisations in New Zealand and the Pacific on a range of education policy, design and implementation projects.
