Debra Rantz

Chief Assessment Officer
Education Quality and Accountability Office
Province of Ontario

Debra is a passionate advocate of student success with 20 years of local and international experience in educational leadership, school improvement and change management. Prior to her work with EQAO, she held the role of Superintendent of Program with responsibilities in K to 12 curriculum, special education, early learning and continuing education. She has served in Ontario schools as principal, vice-principal, department head and classroom teacher. A strong interest in public education and equity of outcomes has motivated Debra’s extensive work in curriculum design, policy writing, strategic planning, staff development and visioning. She brings to her current role a commitment to data-driven, student-centred educational improvement.

The current assessment focus of my work is:

Ontario conducts province-wide tests of students’ literacy and math skills at key stages of their education. This contributes to public accountability and to the continuous improvement on the part of every student in Ontario’s publicly funded education system. These tests are conducted by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Debra is a Superintendent of Education seconded to EQAO to provide senior leadership based on a sound knowledge of curriculum, assessment theory, pedagogy and the realities of teaching and learning in the public school boards of Ontario.
